How to use this guide

Find your people, find your produce

Search by name or neighborhood, or tap a category. Every place here was checked against a 2025–2026 source or is a long-running spot with no closure reports. Places we couldn't confirm are in the call-ahead list at the bottom.

  • Black-owned / Black-led is marked only when the business itself, an owner interview, a state certification or a news story says so. No badge means "not confirmed," not "not Black-owned."
  • Verified 2026 means a current source. Likely open means long-running with no fresh date. Call first.
  • Places outside the city are labeled (Montco, Delco, Chester Co., Delaware, New Jersey).
Mrs. Revell
Mrs. Revell says

Philly has always looked after its own. Spend your money where your neighbors work, and take a friend to the Black Farmers Market on a Saturday. You'll come home with greens and a new sister.

Philly roots

This city has a long history of Black women caring for each other

Documented

Daughters of Africa, 1821

Black washerwomen and domestic workers in Philadelphia pooled small dues to pay each other's sick and burial benefits. By 1838 the city counted about 80 Black benevolent societies. Today's sister circles stand on their shoulders.

Documented

Dr. Rebecca J. Cole, 1867

Born in Philadelphia, she earned her M.D. at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, the second Black woman physician in the U.S. In 1873 she opened a center offering medical and legal help to poor women and children, and argued that disease came from poverty and neglect, not race.

Documented

Mercy-Douglass Hospital

Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital (1895) and Mercy Hospital (1907) trained Black nurses and doctors barred elsewhere, and merged in 1948. Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens led OB-GYN there and later pushed Pap-smear screening for Black women in Philadelphia.

African roots in the soil: the Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram's Garden grows heritage crops of the African diaspora for a community that is mainly West African, Caribbean and Southern Black. Crops like okra, black-eyed peas and greens crossed the Atlantic with our ancestors; historians Carney and Rosomoff show how enslaved Africans planted them in their own provision gardens.
